Not less than N2.5billion has been expended under the Sanitation, Hygiene and Water (WASH) in Nigeria supported by Department for International Development of the United Kingdom and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Bauchi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Jidauna Tula Mbami said made this known while addressing a press conference in commemoration of the 2020 World Water Day (WWD).

He added that the project which started in 2010 had covered 12 local councils where 2,150,898 residents of the state are currently benefiting, saying the project would be extended to other areas.

He said the money was used for the construction and rehabilitation of WASH facilities spread across the project areas– rural communities, schools and primary health care centres. “Sum of N20million was also released by the Bauchi State Government as sanitation pool fund to be managed by microfinance institutions as a revolving fund to increase the construction of improved households’ latrines, as an effort to meet the SDGs,” he said.

Tula noted that plans were ongoing for the construction and rehabilitation of several water supply scheme in semi-urban communities under the African Development Bank supported Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Programme (IBSDLEIP), with about 2.3million additional people expected to gain access to safe water in the State.

The Commissioner said that the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed has invested huge amount of money in the area of counterpart funding to make quality water available. He added that mass replacement of old pipes installation is currently ongoing.
