To ensure a sustainable future and further sensitize the populace on the need to protect the environment, the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), has begun the establish Great Green Wall Clubs in selected schools within 11 frontline states in the country.

The clubs will serve as an outreach programme in secondary schools aimed at training students on how to raise seedlings.

The Director General National Agency for the Great Green Wall NAGGW, Mr. Goni Ahmed made this known when recently flagged off the College Green project of Yusufu Bala Usman College of Legal and General Studies, Daura, Katsina state.

He said that effective synergy with all stakeholders was critical to the attainment of the GGW set goals, adding, “the College Green Project is timely and an initiative that should be commended, encouraged and emulated by other institutions of higher learning.

Ahmed who was represented by Mr. Abdullaziz Kolo, Head Land Resource Management, NAGGW, said with this in place it would provide an opportunity for the Agency to address the problem of land degradation and desertification in drylands area of Nigeria.

He said these selected Secondary Schools would further carry the campaign of protecting tree plants and nurturing them to all nooks and crannies of the north, stressing, it’s a right step in the right direction to create awareness amongst students on their importance to environment.

The director general therefore, commended the College for the laudable project and donated 3, 000 fruit tree seedlings on behalf of the agency in support of the development of the College Orchard.

“The GGW programme is an expression of commitment and a strategy adopted by African Leaders, supported by International community and development partners to fast tract the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) to roll back poverty and address the specific risks and vulnerabilities in our drylands.”

“Though the challenges ahead in our drylands are tremendous, all stakeholders should aim at eliminating poverty by creating wealth within the catchment area. The GGW programme also would serve as a launching cushion for achieving Zero Net Land Degradation Target agreed by World Leaders at the Rio+20 Conference in Brazil.”

“Nigeria is committed to achieving the target and also implement the resolutions adopted by country Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) which Nigeria consented in 1997,” he added.

He added that Daura Emirate has always been one of the important areas that the agency has made interventions over the years, especially shelterbelt, hectares of Orchards, and drilled boreholes in ten communities as well as a comprehensive skill Acquisition central in Sandamu Forest Reserve for the training of people in various vocations and crafts to improve their livelihood.
