The magic of elections

Everyone must have observed around him a flurry of activities alias dividends of democracy with elections just next door! A case in point: Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Everyone must have observed around him a flurry of activities alias dividends of democracy with elections just next door! A case in point: Lagos-Badagry Expressway. No one needs be reminded that it is an international road, our gateway to the West Africa sub-region. It was built by the indefatigable General Mobolaji Johnson. Can anybody forget the historical importance of Badagry, and her unlimited potential for trade and tourism?

The state of the road has been such that recently youths gave notice they were going to shut it down. They shelved the idea because it coincided with President Buhari’s engagement at Seme Border of Nigeria with the Republic of Benin. Before then the Oba Of Badagry, the Onijanikin of Ijanikin, the Alagbara of Agbara and several chiefs with settlements along the road raised a delegation to appeal to Lagos State Government and the Federal Government to fix the road. I recall the President of the Republic of Benin meeting Jonathan at a point to complain about the condition of the road and state the readiness of his country to support the effort, in fact by bearing part of the funding. He said the heavy-duty vehicles from Togo, Ghana and the Republic of Benin plying the road carrying goods to and from Lagos, Nigeria, were regularly overturning spilling their goods on the road and in the bush. All the entreaties fell on deaf ears.

Fashola tried to patch it twice a year. Last week, I sought to get away from the suffocating polluted air in town for the breeze of the Badagry waters and the unending uplifting beach. I was pleasantly surprised there is feverish reconstruction work going on there from Badagry end! I had nothing to say than pray that we hold elections every year. Can all who wish Nigeria well join me and chorus Amen, please!! The Nigerian politicians!!!

• I apologize I am unable to continue with the discourse on CJN Onnoghen in view of rapid developments around it.
