Reps to admit Jibrin for investigations into alleged ownership of undeclared foreign accounts
To this end, the House has passed a motion to allow Jibrin into the House, only for the purpose of appearing before the committee on Ethics and Privileges.Chairman of the committee, Ossai Nicholas Ossai, in a motion titled; ‘the need to grant Hon. Abdulmumini Jibrin fair hearing in respect to petitions against him,” noted that his committee has commenced investigation into the petition.
He said the anti-corruption wing of the National Youth Council had alleged in the petition that Abdulmumini owned and operated foreign accounts in violation of Nigeria’s constitution and the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.
According to Ossai, there is also a petition by the suspended lawmaker’s constituents bothering on absenteeism and poor representation by Jibrin.
Jibrin represents Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency of Kano State.
According to Ossai, “the committee on Ethics and Privileges has commended investigation into the petitions and seek the indulgence of the House to invite Hon. Abdulmumini Jibrin, on the grounds of fair hearing, to be allowed into the precincts of the House for the purpose of defending the allegations contained in the petitions.”
But the member representing Dalla federal constituency Aliyu Madaki raised a point of order (9:5(1) which states that reference must not be made on any matter on which judicial pronouncement is pending.
Madaki noted that Jibrin had approached the court to challenge his suspension, thereby suggesting that all matters regarding the suspended lawmaker should await the decision of the court.
“Mr. Speaker, Abdulmumini is not my friend, but we should do what is right. I ask that we allow the court case to take its cause. Mr. Speaker, you are a lawyer, we should do justice to everybody, whether the person is your friend or your enemy,” he said. The Speaker overruled Madaki’s order, as he said the House was not aware of any court case about absenteeism and foreign account.
