LEADERS of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Central Senatorial district of Ondo State yesterday threw their weight behind the decision of Senator Tayo Alasoadura in supporting Dr. Bukola Saraki as the Senate President.

Alasoadura had during the straw poll organized by the national leadership of the APC, voted for Saraki against the widely-believed leadership preference for Ahmad Lawan, resulting in a section of the party criticizing his choice.  He was the only APC Senator in the Southwest geo-political zone to have voted for the new Senate President.

The new Senator, who like Saraki, has his political background in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was for the years that the party ruled Ondo State under the administration of late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, the Commissioner for Finance before he decamped to then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The leaders led by the chairmen of the six local governments constituting the Senatorial District where Alasoadura represents at the National Assembly said they gave their consent to the Senator before casting his lot with Saraki.

The leaders said it would be wrong to see the decision of Alasoadura in voting for Saraki as anti-party as he consulted widely before taking the decision.

One of the members who opposed Alasoadura’s decision, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye who incidentally is from Iju, Akure North Local Government Area like the Senator, accused him of betraying the trust of the party and the people.

Ogunleye has however been suspended indefinitely alongside his Ward 9 party chairman, Mr. Ojo Adegbola for anti-party activities.

The leaders of the District in a communiqué released after the meeting and signed by Chief Eleti Joshua, the Chairman of Akure North APC Chairman, his Secretary, Mr Tunde Adesunloro, Women leader, Mrs. Joke Oluwafemi and Tayo Afolayin among others said the suspension of Ogunleye takes immediate effect.

They stated that Senator Alasoadura consulted widely both at the state and national level of our great party before he decided to support Dr. Bukola Saraki.

The communiqué reads, “there was no Local Government executive meeting where distinguish Senator Alasoadura was reprimanded for his action and such directive could not have emanated at all.

“Having gone through our party (APC) constitution and Federal Republic of Nigeria constitution, there is no where it is written that you cannot support any candidate of your choice and interest. Therefore, Senator Donald Tayo Alasoadura has not in any way violated APC constitution as well as that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Judging from the above, the entire APC members in Akure North Local Government strongly belief in the personality of the Senator Alasoadura, his leadership and his ability to give good representation.

“We hereby suspend Mr. Saka Yusuf Ogunleye indefinitely alongside his party/ Ward 9 Chairman, Ojo Adegbola and their suspension takes immediate effect.”
