Prominent indigenes of Ikere-Ekiti under the aegis of the Ikere Development Forum (IDF), have adopted the Deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola and Wole Oluyede, as preferred candidates for the July 14 governorship election.

They gave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s ticket to Olusola and the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s slot to Oluyede. The group, led by a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Wole Olanipekun (SAN), said the decision was aimed at boosting the chances of Ikere-Ekiti to produce the next governor for the state.

A source at the meeting said the IDF conducted screening for four APC aspirants namely: Oluyede, Sesan Fatoba, Funminiyi Afuye and Kola Alabi on February 10 and 11.Governor Ayo Fayose had earlier led the state PDP to adopt Olusola, who is an Ikere indigene as his preferred candidate. “IDF said it was working towards having the two major parties to field Ikere indigenes as their flag bearers for the July 14 poll.

“At the February 10 session, Olusola and the five APC aspirants were given a few minutes each to address the gathering on their suitability.”“It was unanimously agreed that Ikere aspirants should shelve personal interests and ensure that only one of them goes into the primary election on the platform of each political party.

“On the following day, all the four APC aspirants met with the IDF leadership for over five hours and were given forty five minutes to agree among themselves who should be the party’s consensus candidate from the town.

“Emerging from the meeting, the aspirants gave the IDF the privilege to choose one of them after which the group went into another private session where it was unanimously agreed that Oluyede is the preferred APC candidate.”Speaking on his emergence yesterday, Oluyede said he was humbled to have been chosen among the five aspirants as the community’s preferred candidate for the APC ticket.
