Youths for Safer Environment (YSE), a feeder group of Ijaw National Congress (INC), has condemned the killing of some youths in Korokorosei community, Southern Ijaw Local Council of Bayelsa State, by operatives of a security outfit attached to an oil multinational in the area.

In their protest contained in an affidavit deposed to by some youth leaders from the community at the Magistrate’s Court of Bayelsa, they claimed that over six persons were gruesomely murdered at different times by the guards.

While condemning the act, the group lamented that the victims were murdered in cold blood, “even without provocation”, adding that it was “clearly an act of wickedness and overzealousness to have fired live bullets at innocent and defenceless citizens.”

In a statement signed by Comrade Fred Ilorifa, the president of the group, he warned: “The “era of mindless killings of our youths is over, as we shall no longer accept or condone prejudicial killings, under any guise, in any of our communities.” He stated further that the group was determined to ensure that those behind the killings were not only brought to book, but also prevented from holding any leadership
positions in all communities of the state.

Father of one of the victims, Mr. Emiye Igbe of Umbugbene community, in his own deposition, accused the operatives of the security company of unwarranted attacks allegedly on the suspicion that some persons had vandalised some pipelines belonging to the oil major. He alleged that the security operatives invaded his community on September 5, 2018, “and without any proper investigation, started shooting sporadically and negligently.”

Igbe maintained that it was one of the bullets that killed his 25-year-old son and father of three, Bubeinimibofa. For recompense, he has asked for a compensation of N50 million to enable him to take care of the children of the deceased. In the same vein, the killing of one Ayawei Erelayefa has also been protested, with his brother, Eric Ayawei, deposing to an affidavit that detailed how his brother was shot in the left rib, leading to his death by same guards.YSE has similarly demanded a compensation of N40 million to facilitate the setting up of a foundation in memory of the departed. It also demanded the prosecution of the perpetrators, including their sponsors.
