Ekiti 2018: Security agencies warn parties against subverting peace


Less than 48 hours to the lifting of ban on political campaign by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), heads of security agencies in Ekiti State have warned political parties taking part in this years governorship election not to subvert the peace being enjoyed by the people.
 
The security chiefs gave the warning, yesterday, during a stakeholders’ meeting with the leadership of political parties at the state Police Command headquarters in Ado Ekiti.

Those at the meeting were Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Chafe; Director of State Services (DSS), Mrs. Promise Ihenacho;Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Donatus Ikemefuna; Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety.Corps (FRSC), Ismail Kugu; representative of the Nigerian Army; state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gboyega Oguntuase; state Assistant Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gbenga Akinwunmi; Accord Party state Chairman, Samuel Odeoba; state Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rotimi Ojomoyela; and representatives of other parties.

The security cautioned leaders of political parties against sponsoring violence before, during and after the election, warning that whoever does so would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

Chafe, who spoke on behalf of others, allayed residents’ fear that the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has special interest in the July 14 election and could do everything possible to win it, assuring that the federal government was not interested in deploying federal might to impose anybody on the state, as being rumoured.

“The only interest it has is to ensure the security of lives and property and that the votes of the electorate count,” he stated. He said intelligence information revealled that some politicians were secretly training youths to perpetrate electoral violence, warning that such would not be tolerated in the state.Speaking for the parties, Oguntuase and Akinwunmi promised the parties’ maximum cooperation for the success of the election.
