The All Progressives Congress (APC) has annulled the Zamfara State governorship primaries.

The party adduced malpractices, such as snatching of election materials and result sheets, as reasons for the annulment.

In a statement by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yekini Nabena, the party stated that a new date for the conduct of a fresh primary would be announced soon.

The party also condemned what it termed unauthorised congresses held in Edo State into the Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly.

Describing the exercise null and void, the party, which thereby appointed Hajia Farida Odangi Suleiman to conduct the primaries, assured that the Odangi-led committee would make available the list of aspirants screened for the exercise and conduct a transparent primary election in accordance with the guidelines and constitution of the APC.

Meanwhile, a member of the National Assembly, Senator Umar Kurfi (Katsina Central), is among lawmakers that would not be returning to the Senate next year following his defeat in the APC senatorial primaries.

Kurfi was defeated by former Managing Director of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Kabiru Abdullahi Barkiya.

Barkiya won with 1,466 votes while his closest rival and junior brother to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Col. Abdulaziz ‘Soja’, scored 913 votes.

Third and fourth positions went to senators Ibrahim Ida and Kurfi, both who scored 897 and 141 votes respectively.

For Katsina North Senatorial Zone, the incumbent Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita was returned unopposed. But Bello Mandiya won the exercise for Katsina South after he polled 1,469 votes to beat his closest rival, Farouq Jube, who scored 1,095 votes.

In another development, the rank and file of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State yesterday depleted substantially as it lost another of its gubernatorial aspirants, Musa Nashuni, to the ruling APC.

Nashuni, a former PDP gubernatorial flagbearer and Commissioner for Resource Development during former Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema’s tenure, defected to the APC at the state secretariat in Kankia Local Council alongside hundreds of his supporters.

He is the second gubernatorial aspirant to defect from the PDP to the APC.

Nashuni said he left the PDP because of lack of justice and fair-play even as he called on rest of his supporters still in the PDP to move over with him to the APC.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari, who welcomed Nashuni and rest of his defecting supporters to the APC, represented by Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita (Katsina North), assured them of equal treatment and fair-play as they had become members of one political family.
