GOVERNORSHIP candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has visited the island communities of Ido-Oluwo-Ile, Ikaare Ibeshe and Ilashe on the Atlantic Ocean, to commission blocks of classrooms and toilets on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The project forms part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) sited in some offshore communities of Lagos by the Presidency.

It was the first time the Ido-Oluwo Primary School would be receiving attention from any government since the standing “poultry shed” was built by the regime of Alhaji Lateef Jakande in the Second Republic.

Another such project was commissioned at Salvation Army Primary School, Ikaare.

On tour with the PDP governorship hopeful were about 200 delegates, including, his running mate, Alhaja Safurat Abdulkarim; Legal Adviser to Lagos PDP, Mr. Leke Adefala and Director-General of the Agbaje Campaign Organisation, Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran.

Mr. Rotimi Yahovi, who supervised the projects, said they were funded exclusively by the Presidency.

“The project does not have funding from the Lagos State Government or the local government; these are things that lower levels of government should have done but they did not do,” he said.

“This old one was constructed by Jakande and since then, nothing had been built to improve the situation of the school.

“This is why the Presidency decided to improve the lot of the school by building these brand new classrooms and toilets, complete with borehole water supplies.”

According to Agbaje, the projects were in line with his vision for education in Lagos.

“What we have done today is in tandem with what we have always said: that if government neglects basic education, the life of the child cannot be straightened out,” he said.

“The fact is that without education, one will not attain a good standard of living.”

Agbaje also underscored the significance of the projects being sited in primary schools.

“If a child loses it in primary school, then nothing can be done to remedy the sad situation,” he said.

He prayed that the beneficiaries would grow to become lawyers, engineers, doctors and even governors, “because the foundation for success in life starts with a good foundation at the primary school level.”

Agbaje urged the people to repay the kindness done them by voting for the PDP in the next elections.

He said: “May God bless Jonathan for this initiative. He deserves our thanks and our votes.

“This was done by PDP. It is time for us to think very well, which party is interested in the people’s development? PDP did this for you.”

Promising to bring development to such backwater communities, Agbaje said: “We have to bring infrastructural development that will include water, and I can assure you that my deputy and I shall not forget nor neglect this community.”

At the palace of the Ofori of Ibeshe, Oba Alani Razak Gasau, Agbaje said the Jonathan administration placed education on its priority list, and cited the creation of 13 universities and the institution of the Almajiri educational system in the North, as part of its achievements.

The Ibeshe people said they had been without electricity for the past seven years, and asked him to help light up the community whenever he attained power.
