To Governor Ambode

Akinwumi Ambode, Lagos State Governor.

Akinwumi Ambode, Lagos State Governor.

Sir: Life has not returned to normal for the people whose vehicles were torched during the Iyana- Ipaja oil tanker accident and the inferno that rocked the area on Tuesday, June 4, 2015.

As you are aware, the inferno woke up residents of Iyana-Ipaja and Bakare Jafojo Street who helplessly watched the fire consume property. In an attempt by one of us to salvage his vehicle, he was caught by the raging fire. He is still recuperating from the injuries he sustained from the incident after he was recently discharged from the hospital. We are grateful to our Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for his magnanimity in giving succour to the people whose houses and tricycles were damaged by the inferno, by way of compensation for their losses.

However, seven months down the line, 21 of the victims whose vehicles were charred are yet to be compensated. We sleep and wake up every day thinking of the unfortunate incident that took away our means of livelihood. We are pleading that the governor should also put smiles on our faces.  The fact that virtually all of the victims are using Third Party insurance covers made our case worse, as the insurance companies were not liable to compensate us for our losses either.

Our last option is to take our case to our benevolent governor through this medium and we believe that he is going to use his good office to assist us the same way others were assisted. We are also using this medium to let the governor know that some of the affected victims are commercial drivers, they depend on the vehicles to survive. Some are yet to complete paying the money they borrowed to buy their vehicles.

Sir, we would like to add that government officials came from Alausa to sympathise with us, cleared the carcasses of our vehicles and went with our particulars.  We are reminding the governor about his promise and appealing to him to do something positive to ensure that our lives return to normal.

Mr Ayodele *Abiodun and Omoniyi Aluko,
Committee for Vehicle Owners.
