Zamfara Raises Concern Over Child Labour Menace

ZAMFARA State Governor, Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar has called for concerted efforts and well-designed strategies to overcome the menace of child labour across Nigeria.

The governor made the appeal yesterday at the World Day Against Child Labour organised by Zamfara State office of Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Gusau.

He expressed his government’s concern over the number of children that have found themselves in various forms of labour that deny them the opportunity to education.

Represented by the permanent secretary, Carriers and General Services, Aminu Muhammad Gusau, he expressed government determination to the elimination of child labour across the state, saying that the practice undermines children’s opportunity to acquire basic education that is necessary for productive adult life.

He said the state government has set up a state steering committee to spearhead the responsibility of coming up with a workable, acceptable state action plan for the elimination of child labour in the state.

In his remark, Save the Children representative, Alhaji Ibrahim appealed to the state government for the adoption of Child right act which according to him would ensure full enforcement of law related to child abuse, and promote their rights.
