Son of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky yesterday protested against the transfer of his parents from the State Security Services (SSS) to a Kaduna prison last Friday

Son of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky yesterday protested against the transfer of his parents from the State Security Services (SSS) to a Kaduna prison last Friday, which he said has jeopardised their health and put his father’s life at risk.

Mohammed Ibrahim Zakzaky, the only surviving son of El-Zakzaky and Zeenah El-Zakzaky, had in a letter on the update of the health of his parents, expressed his dissatisfaction over the development, saying the continuous mistreatment of his father by the Nigerian was distasteful.

“It is well known that conditions in the jail are so bad that they take a heavy toll on healthy prisoners, let alone those who have health challenges.

“As you are aware my father has lost sight in one eye as a result of being shot during the Zaria massacre of December 2015.

He has also suffered several strokes, while in detention and more than one independent doctor has recently attested to the critical state of his physical health, saying that he is at risk of death.

“My mother is also seriously ill with high blood pressure and can barely walk because of severe arthritis, she also has a bullet trapped near her spine, Mohammed said.

He also protested an alleged refusal of access by him and other family members and legal representatives to El-Zakzaky in spite of a court to that effect.

Meanwhile, a coalition of civil society groups and activists, the Human Rights Agenda Network (HRAN) working for the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria, has urged all key actors to increase efforts at safeguarding human rights in the country.

As the world marks the International Day for Celebration of Human Rights, the activists lamented that the year recorded several rights violations and abuses from state and non-state actors.
