Yuletide: Dickson pledges support to FRSC’s safety initiatives

Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa has pledged support to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as it inaugurates the 2016 Ember Months activities in the state.

Dickson, who made the pledge during the inauguration on Friday in Yenagoa, said that the importance of road safety to national development could not be over-emphasised.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the title of the event was “Crash the Crash” was to enlighten the public on the need to drive to stay alive during and after the Christmas.

The Governor, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Mr Boma Spero-Jack, however, commended the corps operations on ensuring safer roads in the state.

“We will continue to give our support to ensure that our roads are smooth and good for driving; I urge the corps to keep the flag flying in saving people’s lives,” the governor said.

Mr Jonas Agwu, the Assistant Corps Marshal, Zonal Commanding Officer, RS6, Port Harcourt, said that the ember month rally was aimed at creating public awareness on road safety.

Agwu said that the launching was necessary, especially at this period of heavy traffic movement across the country.

He decried the way accidents had destroyed lives and property across the country, adding that the corps was ready to monitor the highways in the zone to ensure more safety at Christmas.

“Over the years, we have witnessed how speed-induced crashes have continued to cause havoc to innocent lives and destruction of valuable property on our country’s highways.

“The FRSC is still calling on commercial drivers to embrace the speed limiting policy without pains of enforcement.

“We want them to install it before the last day of December, because aggressive enforcement will commence from Feb. 1, 2017,” he said.

Mr Wobin Gora, the Bayelsa Sector Commander of the FRSC, said that the corps had mapped-out plans to ensure adequate policing of roads during the yuletide.

“We are going to deploy our men to various locations, especially to the East-West road, which is our main target.

“We also have our emergency team that we will be sending to all the locations,” Gora said.
