Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA) Worldwide has cautioned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) against increasing energy tariff in the country.

In a statement yesterday in Ibadan by its national president, Olalekan Hammed, the group deplored the current monthly bills being paid by Nigerians, describing the amount as outrageous. He said: “A lot of people have made efforts to get prepaid meters so that the amount of electricity used per kwh by an end-user would commensurate with the levy charged by the distribution firms.

“Extortionately, the distribution companies have deliberately refused to give them the prepaid meters despite paying for them in order to overcharge consumers and exploit them unnecessarily. Any attempts to increase tariff would be opposed.

“Both the NERC and the distribution companies (DISCOs) should prioritise achieving stable power supply and ensure that all homes that have paid for the meters were given the facilities before any talks of increment. Besides, such move would worsen the suffering of the masses.”

Besides, the Ekiti Government and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) have renewed commitment to tackle vandalisation of power installations and related problems for improved supply in the state.

The Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Bamidele Faparusi, during the signing of a new pact between the two parties on Wednesday in Benin City, decried the inadequate power supply in Ekiti. He, however, told reporters yesterday in Ado-Ekiti that both parties pledged to boost business activities, the economy and reduce unemployment through power generation in the state.

BEDC ‘s Managing Director, Mrs. Funke Osibodu, noted that the major hindrance to the supply of adequate power to the state was a pending suit against the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the right of way along Igbara Odo and Ilara Mokin axes in Ondo State which had stalled the upgrading of network facilities.

She added that her firm had approved over 100 projects in its bid to support and grow economic activities in Ekiti.Osibodu urged the residents to make themselves available for the metering enumeration exercise holding in three weeks time in the state for accurate measurement and billing.
