The Nasarawa State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old housewife for allegedly drowning her two step daughters in a well.

The command Spokesman, DSP Kennedy Idirisu, made the confirmation to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia.

According to him, the woman (names withheld) allegedly drowned the minors in a well in their house separately at three months interval.

Idirisu alleged that the suspect first threw a two-year-old baby, Baaba, into the well in April, but the family thought the baby mistakenly fell into the well and died.

He said that the suspect, had on Aug. 26, raised alarm the that another four-year-old child, Zainab, had fallen into the well, adding that the husband, Alhaji Isah, dashed into the well to rescue the baby.

Idirisu said the husband brought the baby out of the well dead with her hands tied.

He said that the development drew suspicion from family and villagers which led to the arrest of the suspect in Yelwan-Bassa village of Kokona Local Government.

The Police spokesman said the suspect later confessed to her crimes and accepted responsibility for killing her husband’s children.

He said that investigation revealed that the suspect, who is the Isah’s second wife, was always at loggerheads with the first wife.

Idirisu said that efforts by their husband to settle their difference were unsuccessful.

He alleged that the suspect claimed that her husband’s first wife was always instigating her children not to run errands for her, a development that infuriated her since she had no child.

The spokesman said that the suspect gave birth to a baby girl in 2016, but the child died six months later.

He said the suspect would soon be prosecuted.
