A section of elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State yesterday offered an insight into why they are opposed to the appointment of Senator Godswill Akpabio as minister in the coming Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The elders, under the aegis of Ibom Integrity and Servant Leadership Culture Initiative, claimed that the choice of Akpabio would alter the prevailing peace in the state.

In a statement by its executive vice president, Dr. Asuquo Edidem Etim, the group urged President Muhammadu Buhari never to contemplate the move.

They had penultimate week written the Nigerian leader informing him that the ex-governor was not their choice.

But the statement was, however, faulted by the leadership of the state chapter of the APC which denied knowledge of the group’s existence and consequently dismissed its submission.

According to Etim, the ongoing investigation of the erstwhile Senate Minority Leader by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for corruption allegations and his alleged flippancy and haughty public utterances were an albatross to his proposed appointment.

They said nominating him for such a high office would cast aspersion on the anti-graft war of the current administration.

The elders submitted: “The following verifiable fact check will help to ascertain the objectivity and veracity of our earlier assertion as contained in our letter to Mr. President, which is that: Senator Akpabio is still under probe of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)), hence unfit for ministerial nomination in the Next Level government.

“He was a destabilising factor in Akwa Ibom APC which contributed to the party’s poor outing at the recent elections. His profligacy in public office and hunger for power corrupt his sense of propriety, which make him ignore norms, standards and traditions.

“His flippancy and haughty public utterances still hurt our party till date.”
