‘Why corruption thrives in Nigeria’

As the International Missions Conference of the Assemblies of God, Nigeria in association with the Central Africa Assemblies of God Alliance comes to an end, the General Superintendent of the church in Nigeria, Rev. Dr. Chidi Okoroafor, has said Nigeria is in dire need of leaders, who can steer the nation’s affairs with fear of the Lord.

Speaking with journalists at the Conference with the theme: “Accelerating the Harvest in the 21st Century,” held at the National Stadium in Lagos, the General Superintendent noted that corruption is on the increase because the country lacks leaders who have the fear of God.

He said: “As we are fighting corruption, we need righteous people in power, because it is when people who fear God are in power that the issue of corruption would naturally be handled. But it is when corrupt men, who don’t fear God are in power that the nation will go down.”

He urged Christians to participate in politics, especially those who have the leading of the Holy Spirit. The cleric, who also spoke on restructuring, said Nigerians should be free to decide the fate of their own country and how it should be governed. He called on Federal Government to involve Nigerians in decision-making, so as to make implementation very easy.

While urging delegates that came from Nigeria, Cameroon, Central Africa, Chad, Kinshasa, Congo Democratic Republic, Congo Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe to take the gospel to unreached people of the world, Dr. Okoroafor said the church has abandoned its core responsibility of preaching the gospel and winning souls for the Lord.

“We need to fast-track the harvest and evangelism, which is the church’s main purpose. Unfortunately today, certain churches have become entertainment centres, where people come to laugh.”

But the church’s basic assignment is to reach out to the dying world,” he said.The President of CAAGA/General Superintendent, Assemblies of God, Gabon, Rev. Jude B. N’gouwa said: “Our vision is to unite our efforts, as we have one Leader, Who is Jesus Christ. We are here to encourage each other so as to accelerate the harvest in the 21st century. That means we should not be working alone in our country.”

The CAAGA conference ended, last Thursday, with the Business Session where the General Assembly conducted election for the new executives of CAAGA and Dr. Chidi Okoroafor, GS AG Nigeria was elected as the new President CAAGA alongside other executives of CAAGA.
