WARDC Petitions Govt Over Maternal Deaths

MATERNAL MORTALITYWOMEN Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), has petitioned Lagos State Government on the rising cases of maternal deaths occurring in its primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals.

The group, which embarked on a protest to lay their complaint, marched to the House of Assembly demanding for thorough investigations surrounding deaths of women, while bearing children in the hospitals, including the death of Mrs. Afolake Oduyoye, who died recently due to complications after her husband could not afford to pay the N1.5million bill charged.

According to WARDC’s Executive Director, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, “we cannot continue to watch and have women die during childbirth, it is our responsibility to make sure this ends. All these deaths could have been prevented. It has also become too rampant and we are saying enough is enough.”

Citing the WHO 2014 report in their petition, which states Nigeria’s Maternal Mortality Rate, is 560 deaths per 100,000 live births, a factor the group says is as a result of government’s failure to give adequate attention to maternal health.
