Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU), Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, has urged governors of the Southwest zone to avail themselves of research works from the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan, Oyo State, to develop the agriculture potential of their respective states.

Ogunbodede stated this in his speech at the 50th anniversary of IAR&T, which took place in the main auditorium of the institute.

According to him, the institute has asserted itself as a leading driver of agricultural development in the country.

The theme of the celebration is ‘50 Years of Agricultural Research and Delivery Towards Improved Livelihood’.

Southwest leaders, he noted, should explore their proximity to the institute and use its research findings to improve on their Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR).

The don noted that over the years, IAR&T had demonstrated commitment, perseverance and resilience in the pursuit of quality and excellence in research and service delivery, adding that it was ripe to run full-time undergraduate programmes in agriculture courses.

Executive director of the institute, Prof. James Adediran, declared that “IAR&T stands tall” among other agricultural research institutes within and outside Nigeria.

Adediran said: “The institute is a multi-commodity national research institute that serves as a national centre for integrated research on the improvement of the genetic potential of our crops and livestock.

“Other activities centre on improvement on production, yield and quality as well as utilisation of food and industrial crops and livestock that are adaptable to the broad agro-ecological zones of Southwest Nigeria.”
