Students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), have decried the outrageous hike in hostel clearance fee from N2, 100 to N7, 100 for the 2019/2020 academic session. The hostel supervisors, had in a statement, informed that henceforth the clearance fee will consist of hostel levy, Students Union Government (SUG) calendar fee, bedspread and mackintosh.

According to the circular, “Hostel clearance is now N7,100.  Hall levy and SUG calendar fee remains unchanged, N1, 500 and N600 respectively. The mackintosh and bed spread is summed up to N5, 000.”

However, students have shown displeasure over the increase as they claim that the added items are irrelevant given that they have always had their individual bed sheets and the beds are bedbug infested, thus, there will be no need for the mackintosh. Following this development, online campaigns have began circulating against the indiscriminate increase in the fee with the hash tag, #”say no to N7, 100 hostel clearance fee.”

An anonymous student wrote, “I’m appealing to the lions and lionesses of this great institution to resist any form of compulsory N5, 000 for mackintosh and bed spread, which most of us already have in twos. We are not cowards; if we keep quiet they will do even more,” she said, urging the SUG to act fast on the development.  But the SUG president, Chimezie Fortunatus, in a chat with The Guardian urged students not to comply with the new directive.
