To mark its 50th anniversary, the University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS) has outlined a one-week activity to celebrate its milestone by bringing together employees and students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in furtherance of its objective of promoting welfare and understanding within the university community and environs.

Established in 1967, ULWS was formed by a group of senior female employees and wives of senior staff members of the university, to promote and solve the challenges facing girl child education in the society. Its flagship programme is tagged Ladies Connect, where female students are empowered on coping with the challenges of womanhood.

As part of its achievements, two female students emerged the best graduating students in their faculty with a 5.0 CGPA – Oyindamola Omotuyi, Department of System Engineering and Taiwo Bankole, Department of Cell Biology and Genetics. The group is also constructing a 500 space female hostel, which is still on going.

Speaking with The Guardian, president of ULWS and wife of the Vice Chancellor, Mrs. Memudat Adedoja Bello, said the group believes in training girls academically as a means of championing equal right in the society.

“We believe that when you train a woman as it is said, you train a nation, so we want our girls to develop into better women,” she added.

Activities lined up for the anniversary slated for April 3 to 9, according to the chairman, Organizing Committee, Mrs. Yemi Oguntoye, include: “A walk for Knowledge,” where the principal officers of the university and the women society would walk round the school campus; “School day” where alumni of ULWS nursery and primary school would have a get together with the present pupils; “Lecture on womanhood” by Mrs. Folorunso Alakija who is the special guest of honour; launch of a book on the history of the society; long service award for staff, Jumat prayers and novelty match; award night and a thanksgiving service to wrap up the celebrations.
