The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos yesterday charged students to defeat prejudice through excellence.

United Nations Country Director, Mr. Ronald David Kayanja made the call to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

It held a poster exhibition, film screening and educational briefing at the African Church Model College, Ifako, Lagos to remember the day.

He charged the students to strive to defeat the idea that black skin is inferior to other races.

He said: “The remembrance is to eliminate the bad perception and the way other races treat black people who they regard as inferior.

“We see new forms of slave trade happening around the world and this is not acceptable to us at the UN.”

He said humans should be judged by their abilities and not the colour of their skin.

March 25 is set aside every year in remembrance of the over 400 years 15 million men, women and children victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his message said: “The International Day set aside to remember those who suffered the brutalities of the transatlantic slave trade, is an “epically shameful” chapter of human history.”
