Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has urged workers to vigilant and apply all necessary safety measures rolled out by authorities to curtail the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Umahi spoke yesterday through his Special Assistant on Inter-party and Labour Matters, Mrs. Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor, to mark the Workers’ Day.

He praised the contribution of workers in the frontline of the battle against the virus, especially those in the health sector, who continued to render selfless service to save the lives of the many infected with the dreaded coronavirus.

Urging the workers to wash their hands regularly, use hand sanitisers and face masks, avoid crowded places and obey all government’s directives on COVID-19, the governor charged them to remain resolute and stay safe amid the pandemic.

According to him, this year’s May Day is quite remarkable, coming at a time the entire human race is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, which, at the last count, has infected over 3.28 million and claimed 234,000 lives globally.

There is no better day than today to salute the courage, faith and the uncommon love and sacrifices of the frontline workers who have given more than what the call to duty demands to give hope to humanity, he said.

“Today, we appreciate other members of the workforce who provide us with essential services. We remain grateful to our transport workers, utility employees, journalists, bankers, and even workers in the informal sector, who have continued to show up at their duty posts despite the threat of this pandemic,” the governor noted.

In the area of workers’ empowerment, His Excellency has provided N4 billion single digit loan to workers in the state, in which about 7,200 civil servants in the state have benefitted, the aide added

On payment of workers salaries, she noted that Umahi ensured instant payment of workers on or before the 15th day of every month. “In fact, that of April this year was paid on the first day of the month to enable workers stock food to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 partial lockdown in the state.”
