Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has declared that he would hand over governance to his deputy, Kelechi Igwe in the event that he tests positive for coronavirus.
He stated this in Abakaliki at the swearing-in ceremony of some newly appointed government officials, disclosing that his samples for COVID-19 test have been sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and that the result was being expected.

Speaking shortly after the event, Umahi said he had to send his samples after some government officials tested positive for the pandemic recently after the budget review meeting, which was attended by most government officials.

He, however, declined to reveal the identities of those who tested positive for the virus, saying the result of the tests would be released yesterday and promised to keep the people informed about the outcome.

Umahi pointed out that his administration had devised new measures to contain the spread of the virus, stressing that if he tested positive for the scourge, he would immediately go into isolation. He said another meeting to discuss the new plans would be held next week and that he might have to attend the meeting virtually, if the result of his test proved positive.

“If I test positive, my deputy will carry on with the fight as a frontline worker, but we will be extremely careful and use zoom to do our jobs. No retreat, no surrender! We will fight this COVID-19 matter to the end.

“We will have the public hearing on our proposed plan of the COVID-19 fight next week and either me or my deputy will head the meeting, and I will contribute through zoom, if I test positive,” he added.
