U.S. Embassy marks World Press Freedom day

The United States (U.S.) Embassy has planned a series of activities to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day from May 2 to May 5, 2018.It is organising the events in collaboration with Nigerian institutions and organisations. An American journalist, Linda Hervieux will be visiting Nigeria for the activities.

The United States (U.S.) Embassy has planned a series of activities to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day from May 2 to May 5, 2018.It is organising the events in collaboration with Nigerian institutions and organisations. An American journalist, Linda Hervieux will be visiting Nigeria for the activities.
 
Hervieux is a journalist and photographer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, The New York Daily News, and the Daily Beast among other publications. 

She will speak on The Role of Media in Holding Government Accountable and The Impact of Hate Speech on Press Freedom.U.S. Ambassador, W. Stuart Symington and the U.S. Embassy Counselor for Public Affairs, Aruna Amirthanayagam, will also give remarks at the events.
 
Activities will begin on May 2 with a screening and panel discussion on the investigative movie The Insider.It is a fictionalised account of the true story of a man who decided to tell the world what the seven major tobacco companies knew but concealed information about the dangers of their products. 
 
On May 3, there will be a World Press Freedom Day lecture at the Nile University of Nigeria for students, faculty members and invited journalists on The Role of the Media in Holding Government Accountable.
 
On May 4, Hervieux will join other panelists and other journalists, government officials and civil society activists to discuss The Impact of Hate Speech on Press Freedom.
 
Engagements for Hervieux will end on May 5 with an interaction with journalism students at the International Institute of Journalism (NIJ) to discuss Ethics in Journalism: Combating Fake News. She will also deliver keynote address at the NUJ Press Freedom Awards 2018 on The Role of Media in Holding Government Accountable.
