Two strange men trail The Guardian’s Abuja bureau chief

It was a scary experience for Abuja Bureau Chief of The Guardian, Mr Niyi Bello, as unknown persons suspected to be kidnappers trailed him from his office located at Plot 415, Olu Awotesu Street, Jabi to his residence on CITEC Estate on Friday.

Two persons on a motorcycle, who were suspected to have been loitering around the office for some time, took after his car, as he left for home around 9.30 p.m., keeping a safe distance.

Getting to Obafemi Awolowo Way, the journalist, initially undecided on which road to take to avoid traffic light delay, saw these
two men immediately swerving left to keep the trail for some four kilometres to the estate’s entrance, from where they drove at top
speed towards the Airport Road.

While no seriousness was attached to the Friday encounter, the appearance of two strange men around the gate to his House 15, C8
Street as early as 8.00 a.m. yesterday, aroused suspicion, especially when enquiries about the new faces from among the youths in the vicinity yielded no identification.

One of the men was also sighted around 10.30 a.m. in the company of another unidentified person, standing under a tree near the gate of The
Guardian’s office, as the journalist, drove into the premises making him conclude that their presence around his person in the last 12 hours was not a coincidence.

Although there is always an armed policeman standing guard at The Guardian office at every point in time, as part of management’s decision to secure lives and property, the matter was reported at the Life Camp Police Station, where detectives took the description of the unknown suspects and gave further security tips.
