The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshall Umukoro, has sentenced two men to 50 years imprisonment with hard labour for robbery.

In his judgment yesterday in Àsaba, Umukoro said the prosecution was able to prove a three count charge of conspiracy for armed robbery and robbery against the accused persons, Monday Majevuaye and Ereva Oteshola.

The Chief Judge, however, held that the prosecution was unable to prove the charge of armed robbery against the accused persons as the witnesses were unable to say whether the accused persons were carrying arms or not.

He said that the victim and other witnesses were unable to prove in their testimonies before the court that the accused persons were the ones who robbed them of their Honda car and other belongings in Warri in 2011.

Umukoro said: “From the totality of evidence before the court, the accused persons are found guilty of a three count charge of conspiracy for armed robbery and robbery and they are sentenced to 25 years in jail each, with hard labour and the sentence will run consecutively starting from the day of arrest.”

According to him, the accused persons were sentenced to five years imprisonment each for count one, ten years each for count two and ten each for count three.
Umukoro said the sentence would serve as deterrent to others as incidences of car snatching have become too rampant.
