Two feared killed in Delta communities’ renewed hostilities

No fewer than two persons were feared killed yesterday at Unenurhie Community, Ughelli North Local Council of Delta State when unidentified gunmen allegedly shot at random in the community.

While residents were said to have scampered for safety, the cause of the shooting may not be unconnected with the deepened crisis between Unenurhie and Uwhere communities in which scores of persons have been reportedly injured.

The two victims of the early morning attack were said to have been hit by stray bullets and were feared dead before help could come their way.

But the President-General of Unenurhie Community, Edjereki Friday who confirmed the incident on telephone, said: “Our neighbours have done what they intended doing as they boasted.”

He disclosed that the two persons were hit by stray bullets, while two others were being treated in a private hospital.

“As I speak, military and police officers have taken over the place to rescue my people. The attackers boasted before now that they will revenge and they have done as they have said,” he added.

But denying the allegation, President General of Uwheru Community, Ogharivi Utso said: “The incident has nothing to do with Uwheru Community as there is no pointer to the fact that gunmen are from Uwheru.

“We in the community will do everything possible to work with the police and fish out the culprits in order to bring them to book”.

However, when contacted on telephone, Andrew Aniamaka of the state Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the hoodlums stormed the community in two saloon cars.

“As we speak, investigation into the incident is ongoing and we will not rest until the culprits are fished out and prosecuted,” he said.

He added that although investigation was ongoing, there are strong indications that the incident was a spillover of the July clash between both communities.

Meanwhile, the police in Abraka have arrested an admission seeker into the Delta State University (DELSU) for allegedly plotting to rob and kill her boyfriend for N500, 000.

The Police confirmed the suspect said she applied for admission to the Mass Communication Department and scored 66 in the August 14 to 19, 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
