Two APC senators lose return bids in Ondo State

Two sitting senators representing Ondo Central and South districts on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tayo Alasoadura, and Yele Omogunwa, have lost their return bids to the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Similarly, the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, who recently left PDP for the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), failed to clinch the central senatorial seat at the weekend’s polls.

Ayo Akinyelure and Nicholas Tofowomo defeated Alasoadura and Omogunwa. Though the results had not been officially announced.

The ruling party only had Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, who represents the northern district, as the sole lawmaker returning for the third time. He beat others, including the Action Alliance (AA) standard-bearer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, to the seat.

The chair of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology polled 55,199 votes to defeat his PDP and AA rivals, who got 34,490 and 43,100 votes.

In the House of Representatives of polls, APC clinched four seats – one in the southern and three in northern districts while PDP won two in the southern and one in the central districts. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and ADC won one each in the central district.

APC flag-bearers won in Akoko North West/East; Akoko South West/East; Owo/Ose and Odigbo/Okeigbo-Ileluji federal constituencies. PDP was successful in Akure South/North; Ilaje/Ese-Odo and Irele/Okitipupa federal constituencies.

ADC and SDP candidates Abiola Makinde and Tajudeen Adefisoye were victoriously in Ondo East/West and Ifedore/Idanre federal constituencies as they dislodged the incumbents, Joseph Akinlaja (ZLP) and Bamidele Bolarinwa (APC).

Victorious reps in the southern senatorial district include Victor Kolade Akinjo (Ilaje/Ese-Odo, PDP); Mayowa Akinfolarin (Odigbo/Ileoluji-Okeigbo, APC); and Gboluga Ikengboju (Irele/Okitipupa, PDP).

In the central district are Makinde (ADC); Adedayo Omolafe (Akure North/South PDP); and Taju Adefisoye (SDP).

In the northern district were Timehin Adelegbe (Owo/Ose, APC); Ade Adeogun (Akoko South West/East, APC); and Bunmi Tunji Ojo (Akoko North West/East, APC).

For the presidential polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as at press time, was able to collate and announce the results of 10 local councils, with the PDP leading with 118,358 votes against the APC’s tally of 99,712 ballots.

The results, under the supervision of the commission’s state collation officer, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, showed that the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and an indigene of the state, Omoyele Sowore, got 943 votes from nine councils.

The major opposition party was leading in seven councils namely Ondo East; Idanre; Akure North; Ose; Ifedore; Ile Oluji/Okeigbo and Irele councils while Akoko North West; Akoko North East and Akoko South East were won by APC.

Whereas results of eight local governments namely Owo; Akoko South West; Okitipupa, Ilaje; Ese-Odo; Ondo West; Odigbo and Akure South were yet to be announced.

The tallies from the four councils in the northern district were: Akoko North East: AAC, 105; APC 15,598; and PDP, 11,641.

Akoko North West: AAC, 113; APC 14,158; and PDP, 13, 950.

Akoko South East: AAC, 26; APC 7,306; and PDP, 6,616.

Ose: AAC, 41; APC 10321; and PDP, 12919.

For the central district, the figures were Akure North: AAC, 129; APC 8661; and PDP, 12,786.

Idanre: AAC, 73, APC 8453; and PDP, 14,704.

Ifedore: AAC, 95; APC, 9433; and PDP, 11745.

Ondo East: AAC, 155; APC, 5299; and PDP, 8455.

In the southern district, the followings were recorded. Ileoluji Okeigbo: AAC, 208; APC, 10404; and PDP, 12680.

Irele: AAC, 93; APC, 10082; and PDP, 12862.
