Troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole operating in close collaboration with the local vigilance group, called Borno Youth empowerment yesterday intercepted and prevented a suicide bombing mission in the area, when four female suicide bombers were stopped. A member of the local vigilante was killed.

A statement issued by the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said the would be suicide bombers were making their way into Mafa, a town less than 30 kilometres into Maiduguri, when they attempted to avoid a checkpoint and diverted into a bush path.

When instructed by some soldiers stationed in the area and the local vigilante, otherwise known as Civilian JTF (Joint Task Force), to take the right path, one of the women in panic detonated her bomb, killing one of the Civilian JTF members. But the “vigilant troops gunned down the other 3 suicide bombers before they could carry out their nefarious acts.”

The statement reads in part: “Today (Wednesday)at about 7.30am, four female suicide bombers were intercepted by troops and Borno Youths Empowerment Youth, otherwise known as Civilian JTF,  ahead of a checkpoint about which is about 25km outskirts of the city of Maiduguri.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that suicide bombers were earlier observed trying to bypass  a military checkpoint through a close by village before they were ordered to take the right road. However,  few metres short of the checkpoint , one of the bombers swiftly detonated her vest. Sadly, one of the Civilian JTF lost his live and 4 other persons sustained various degrees of injuries.”

Usman said the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) team in the area safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Device carried by the other suicide bombers, after they were brought down.
