HAIRSTYLISTS and beauty care specialists recently converged at a workshop to discuss how to improve on their trade.

Held in Abuja, the event tagged Hairmistry and organised by the Nigerian Hair and Beauty Show (NHBS), featured photo shoot, hair stylist competition, hair parade, hair and beauty products and sampling session.

Endorsed by the Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (PHABA), National Association of Hairdressers and Cosmetologist (NASHCO), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the workshop served as an avenue to sensitise practitioners on the need to adhere to personal hygiene, screen and certify beauty products.

According to Daniel Raphael Fache, one of the organisers, “the purpose of the workshop is to empower youths, who intend to advance in the industry and also to promote the entrepreneurship.

“The whole idea is to get participants to learn about hairstyles, what product to use and what not to use because most products are not compatible with certain people and most products are not of quality. That’s why we involved the SON.

“The use of certain products is dependent on the geographical details of the area. In Nigeria for example, the race here is basically black and so, some products are not compatible with the average Nigerian. There are people with soft and medium textured hairs, but predominantly people have coarse hair in Nigeria.

“Advice is also given on using SON approved products because some products can do damage to people’s hairs and scalp or other kinds of harmful effects, which may manifest in the short or long run.”

Ralph’s experience in the hair and beauty industry has spanned quite some years, especially with Lexi Mojo-Eyes of Legendary Gold, where he has been working since 1996.

He was an official stylist during the 2014 African Fashion Reception, held in Bayelsa State and has been an official hair stylist for a number of fashion shows, including African Fashion Week, Nigerian Fashion Week, Nigerian Fashion Show and Legendary Gold’s African Fashion Awards among others
