A teenager simply identified as Tochukwu yesterday stabbed a fellow mate, known as Solo to death, over a stolen mobile phone. According to an eyewitness account, the victim, Solo, was struggling to retrieve his handset from Tochukwu, whom he accused of stealing it and hiding it.

It was learned that while the late Solo was piling pressure on Tochukwu to surrender the phone to him, Tochukwu drew out a sharp kitchen knife from his pocket and stabbed Solo on the chest. While writhing in pains, the deceased summoned courage and pursued Tochukwu despite the blood dripping from his chest until he slumped.

Realising Solo has finally dropped dead, it was gathered that Tochukwu instantly fled the scene and hurriedly threw the knife into a nearby gutter.

However, some angry youths within Sani Giwa road, Sabon Gari, Kano, where the incident occurred, chased and caught the fleeing assailant before handing him over to the police.

Moments after the incident, some police officers stormed the scene and conveyed the lifeless body of Solo, soaked in blood, away.

Meanwhile, a high court sitting in Kano yesterday sentenced a 22-year-old man, Ibrahim Suleiman, to death by hanging for murder. Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Justice A.T. Badamasi, declared Ibrahim guilty of culpable homicide charge and ordered for his execution. Culpable homicide under section 221 of the penal code is punishable by death.

Ibrahim, a resident of Kaya quarter in Gaya local government, who was arraigned in February 2019, was accused of killing a five-year-old minor. “The case of the convicted man was first brought before my lord on February 5, 2019, on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, punishable with death.

“We established the fact that Ibrahim at about 7:30 a.m. used a stick to strike a five-year-old girl named Bilkisu Garba on her head. The little girl later died as a result of the injury inflicted on her by Ibrahim”, Lamido Soron Dinki, a state prosecutor told newsmen.

Lamido said the case was finally determined after the court summoned three witnesses, Jamila Zubairu, Inspector Abubakar Adamu, and Chinda Chiwa, who all testified with a confessional statement against the convict.

Justice Badamasi held that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, and condemned Ibrahim to death by hanging.
