Taraba youths protest Nyame’s imprisonment

Some youths, under the aegis of Mumuye Youth Cultural Development Association, yesterday, embarked on a peaceful protest against Wednesday’s imprisonment of the former governor of the state, Jolly Nyame for 14 years without an option of fine and called for an urgent review of the judgment, which they believed was politically motivated. Armed with placards, bearing various inscriptions, the youths called on the “the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja or the court above to exercise its powers, judiciary and judiciously, by granting bail to our son when the necessary procedures and conditions are comply with”

Led by its president, Ntari Danladi Hassan, the group urged an urgent review of the judgment, wondering why the court failed to provide an option of fine.

However, ActionAid Nigeria has commended the Judiciary and the EFCC for Nyame’s conviction. The group’s country director, Ene Obi noted that the judgement would go a long way to restoring public confidence in the judicial system. Obi who bemoaned the impact of corruption on the lives of the ordinary citizen, noted that “corruption has eroded our common and collective inheritance in the country, widening the gap between the poor and rich, leading to the collapse of health facilities, bad roads, lack of potable water and sanitation, and poor educational facilities. These manifestations have hugely affected the poor, especially women and children.” Ene further appealed to Buhari to recover the stolen N1.64billion and invest it in public service that will benefit the people.
