Fresh attacks on three villages in Gandi District, Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State by people suspected to be a spill-over of the armed bandits terrorising Zamfara State, has left about 25 people dead and hundreds of others homeless. As a result of the attacks which occurred on Sunday in Warnanna and two other villages, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, yesterday postponed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally in Goronyo town to a yet to be announced date.

The governor, who was in Abuja, went straight to the venue of the campaign on his return to Sokoto but left shortly after announcing the incident and the postponement of the event and offering prayers for the repose of the souls of the victims. He left for Rabah to see things for himself as well as witness the burial of those killed.

A similar attack on Tabanni Village in the same district on November 5, last year left about 40 people dead and thousands homeless. The Goronyo rally was to be the beginning of the local government to local government campaigns of the party as it had already concluded the kick-off campaigns in the three senatorial zones.

Meanwhile, the former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has urged the armed forces to evolve new strategy in the fight against insurgency in the north eastern part of the country. He said the ugly circumstances posed by the terrorists were not only heart-rending but also unacceptable, hence the need to adopt a new approach to win the war.

In a statement to commemorate the 2019 edition of the armed forces remembrance day, Babangida asked the military to consolidate its gains and combat strength as a professional establishment that has over the years achieved remarkable successes in protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.

“It is high time we seek to consolidate our gains and also fortify our combat strength. It is pertinent for the top echelons of our military to speedily evolve new combat strategy to bravely confront the callous terrorists who have continued to hold many parts of the north east, and in extension, Nigeria in ransom”.
