Police arrest notorious vandal with arms

Armed men suspected to be sea pirates on Monday night and Tuesday afternoon invaded Ayama community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, killing four persons.

The hoodlums, according to a report, stormed the community at about 9pm and shot sporadically, making the residents to flee in different directions. Ayama is close to Otuoke, the hometown of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

A member of the House of Assembly representing Ogbia Constituency 2, Munalayefa Edwin Gibson, confirmed the attack, which he condemned in strong terms.

According to him, the sea robbers sprayed bullets in the community for over 30 minutes before towing away more than ten speedboats.

The same suspected pirates, after the Anyama operations, stormed Ogbia town at about 12:30 pm yesterday and kidnapped one Mrs. Augusta Apaga.
They also went away with four 75-horse power engine boats parked at the waterfront.

The lawmaker said Ogbia Local Government had been thrown into mourning, particularly in Anyama where three persons were killed and two were injured by stray bullets.

According to him, the way and manner the gunmen operate suggests that there are collaborators from the communities who act as informants and benefit from the loot.

He urged the security agencies not to relent in their effort at arresting the culprits.
The spokesman of the State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the development and said investigation had commenced.

Meanwhile, a suspected cult member and pipeline vandal said to have been declared wanted by the police, Mr. Temona Alison, has been arrested.

Alison, who is in his 20s, was apprehended by operatives of the Bayelsa State Command Strike Force on Sunday in his house on Tombia-Ammassoma Road by Boxi Water.

A police source told The Guardian that the suspect was arrested in possession of four grenades (miniature bombs), one live cartridge, a pair of military uniform and one cutlass, among others.

Butswat, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect was undergoing interrogation.
