Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has been commended for his approach in tackling rising security threats in the state.

A summit on security in the state yesterday organised by a conglomeration of political parties under the aegis of Forum of Progressive Political Parties (FPPP) also expressed readiness to partner with the state government to end the menace.

The chairman, Robinson Adjai, and publicity secretary, Justin Onwuzulike, stated after the summit: “We applaud the governor on the many initiatives of his government, some of which include the recruitment of 1,700 able-bodied forest guards to protect our forests and ensure they do not provide passage for criminals to attack innocent farmers, strengthening of the Neighbourhood Watch Groups Community Vigilantes, as well as procurement of 260 vehicles and motorcycles to be deployed in each electoral ward in the state for effective community policing.

“As part of the measures to curb kidnapping, the state government sponsored the anti-kidnapping bill to make kidnapping a capital offence in the state,” they added.

According to FPPP, as a body of likeminded political parties in Enugu, it deemed it fit to meet and brainstorm on the security situation in the state and further proffer solutions, adding that it enumerated some threats to security in the state.

“Still fresh in our mind are the gruesome murder of Rev. Fr. Paul Offu of St. James the Great Parish, Ugbawka in Nkanu East Council, the murder of a woman at Nchatancha in Enugu East Council, kidnap of a royal father and his wife, kidnap of Augustine Ude (the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands) and the kidnap of Mr. Okwudili Ede (an Enugu-based legal practitioner), all horrible memories of the past weeks,” they added.

While condemning the terror being unleashed on the state, the organisation further commended Ugwuanyi for smoking out criminals from their hide-outs and for on-the-spot assessment of dark spots and ordering the clearing of weeds along the roads to give road users clear view.

The group equally commended the security agencies for their efforts at fighting crimes in the state, but called on them to map out better strategies to protect lives and property.
