‘Stop scooping fuel from accident tankers,’ LASEMA boss warns Nigerians

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Michael Akindele, on Friday warned Nigerians to desist from illegal scooping of petroleum product from tankers involved in road accident.

Akindele, who gave the warning in a signed statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that such act could lead to fire outbreak and loss of lives.

He gave the warning against the backdrop of an accident involving a tanker with registration number BAU 219 XB, carrying 33,000 litres of AGO (Diesel), coming from Oshodi.

The General Manager also said that the vehicle was descending inward Ikorodu road through Anthony link road, when it suddenly slipped off the road due to reckless driving and break failure.

Akindele said this resulted to its collision with Corona School perimeter wall.

“The tanker pulled down part of the wall, fell down and emptied its contents into the surrounding.

“Nobody sustained injury and no mortality recorded.

“Recovery operations still ongoing, our men of LASEMA Emergency Respond Team and Lagos State Fire Service are on ground continuously blanketing the fuel to avoid any outbreak of fire,’’ he said.

He, however, disclosed that the driver of the truck was at large.

He also said that the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company has been contacted and the area has been isolated from electricity to prevent any eventuality.
