Stakeholders mark Safety day

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) World Day of Safety and Health at Work and the World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) is partnering to improve the safety and health of workers and end child labour under the common theme: ‘Eliminating child labour and promoting a culture of prevention on occupational safety health’, which seeks to end all forms of child labour by 2025

The Security & Safety Watch (SSWatch) in marking the day recently held its inaugural Nigeria Safety and Security Awards as a way of encouraging employers of labour and reward persons and organisations towing the path of safety in words and actions. At the event held in Lagos, governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, emerged the Safety Man of the Year, while the Director of Department of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Modecai Danteni Baba Ladan, clinched the Safety Icon of the Year award, just as Nigeria Maritime and Safety Administration Agency (NIMASA) took home the Safety Organ of the Year award.

The guest lecturer, a former safety manager at the Federal Airport of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Godwin Anokwa, who spoke on curtailing the menace of child labour in Nigeria, blamed the inglorious act on poverty and ignorance. Managing editor of SSWatch magazine, Dr. Chinyere Amaechi, urged employers of labour to assign age appropriate tasks to young workers.
