Shot Ekiti lawmaker, Adedeji, dies in hospital

A member of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Michael Adedeji, who was shot last Friday in Ado Ekiti has died.

The gunmen were reported to have shot him in the metropolis, after trailing him from Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Adedeji, 40, who was shot in the head, represented Ekiti Southwest constituency II.

Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeniran Alagbada, confirmed that the lawmaker died at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti (FETHI), where he was taken for medical attention.

He was first admitted at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti before being referred to FETHI.

Speaking with journalists on the matter, Alagbada linked the attack to assassination, saying: “Nothing of his belongings was taken away by these assailants.

“Some people had threatened him on Facebook that they would deal with him for betraying ex-governor Fayose. They were not happy with the way he had been cooperating with Governor Kayode Fayemi,” he said.

According to the speaker, the gunmen trailed him from Akure, and when he attempted to reverse and escape, they shot him at a close range from where they were hiding, adding that the killing was predetermined.

He disclosed that members of Osoko Mass Movement, a political platform of Fayose, were also threatening another member of the House, Cecilia Dada.

The speaker stressed that the House would inform the security agencies about the matter, and also holds a plenary to decide when the burial would hold.

Meanwhile, Governor Kayode Fayemi has described the killing as unfortunate and shocking.

He urged the security agencies to fish out the killers and also stop all politically motivated killings in the state.

Fayemi made the call, while inaugurating the new Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji and his Chief of Staff, Biodun Omoleye, in Ado Ekiti.

Mr. Wale Fapohunda was also sworn in as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, while Mr. Dapo Kolawole would head the Finance Ministry.

He promised to put new security measures in place to tackle all forms of killings in the state.

He explained that he had a meeting with the security chiefs in Ekiti recently, where they deliberated on how to tackle all forms of unwarranted killings in the state, before this dastardly act.
