Ship owners commend FG for directive on Cabotage law implementation

Lagos, April 27, 2015 (NAN) The Nigerian Ship Owners Association (NISA) on Monday commended the Federal Government for giving a directive for the full implementation of the Cabotage Law after 12 years.

The President of NISA, Capt. Niyi Labinjo, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that the Cabotage law, otherwise known as the Coastal and Inland Shipping Act, was enacted in 2003.

“We got the ministerial order last week that Cabotage Law should be implemented with immediate effect.

“Before now, our businesses have been in comatose. Members have not been doing well because most of our businesses have been taken over by foreigners.

“We commend President Goodluck Jonathan for compelling the Minister of Transport to fast-track the implementation of the Cabotage Law,’’ Labinjo told NAN.

The president of the association said that if the Cabotage law was fully implemented, it would create more jobs for youths.

Labinjo said that the Cabatage law would have multiple effects on the economy and would also boost the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
