Former Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, says no stone would be left unturned in the quest to resolve, for once and for all, the bloody clashes between farmers and herdsmen nationwide.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Kaduna after the roundtable of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial on resolution to the menace, the former governor of Kano State said they were committed to the crusade.

Shekarau, who is also the secretary of the foundation’s Board of Trustees (BOT), identified suspicion among the parties as a major factor stoking the crisis.

His words: “ The solution to the clashes is not a one-man or a one-year or ten years’ action. We believe always that the neglect has been for decades, and it will take us probably   much longer time to have it resolved.

“There has been long neglect by various administrations in the past decades as far as the issue of herdsmen and farmers conflict is concerned. With all this identified, the stakeholders were allowed to speak out openly.

“We also identify that the people whom some laws were made for, were not and have not been well sensitised.”

Shekarau went on: “The foundation assembled all presentations, facts and figures and we agreed truly that there are problems. That is the take-off point.

“We want to assure all that the foundation is committed more than ever before to pursue this matter to a logical conclusion.

“We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that peace returns to the country. We are also determined to ensure peaceful coexistence between the herdsmen and farmers.

“We are fully aware that we are not the only organisation doing something on this issue. We will reach out to others, as we don’t know it all.”
