Shehu Sani knocks police over degrading Ekweremadu assassination attempt
Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has berated the Nigerian Police over a comment made on Tuesday’s failed assassination attempt on deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu.
Nigeria police Tuesday night said the country’s deputy senate president was a victim of a burglary attempt and not assassination as he claimed.
“Preliminary investigation carried out so far did not reveal assassination attempt on the life of the Dep Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu and his family but a case of Burglary,” Nigeria Police Force tweeted on Tuesday.
However, the comment made by the police has been deemed as a downgrade of a matter regarding insecurity by Ekweremadu’s colleague at the Nigerian Senate.
“The recent downgrade of the assassination attempt on DSP Ike’s life to ‘a burglary attempt’ means that for one to prove and convince the security agencies that there is a threat to his life, he or she has to actually be killed. And to prove more convincingly, he has to be buried,” Sani tweeted.
Senator Ekweremadu had also insisted that the incident was an attempt to kill him.
“There was a struggle. There was a fight with heavy commotion. And by the grace of God, we eventually caught one of them (suspect) and the rest escaped.”
“The annoying aspect or the one that is worrisome is that at that point, I called the Inspector General of Police,” Ekweremadu said.
Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood, however, said five persons on Ekweremadu’s security detail have been arrested for “negligent acts and dereliction of duty.”
