The Senate Committee on Police Affairs has decried the poor funding of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), identifying insufficient funds as major setback to effective and efficient policing in the country.

Chairman of the committee, Abu Ibrahim, during a seminar organised in collaboration with Police Assistance Committee/Association of Tradesmen/Women and Artisans in Lagos, said a bill for direct funding of the Police was in the offing and when passed, the issue of poor funding of the Force would be a thing of the past.

Ibrahim said the keystone of community policing is the development of partnerships between the community and the Police to reduce crime and address other local problems.

“There is need for citizens to keep a watchful eye on the neighbourhood and report anything suspicious,” he said.

Director General, Police Assistance Committee/Association of Tradesman/Woman and Artisans, Dr. Martins John, said the challenges posed by security situations in the country today have reached a crescendo and called for the involvement of all to join hands together with security agencies to map our strategies on how to confront the menace.

“There is every indication that our society agencies, particularly the NPF, are getting overwhelmed and over-stressed in their efforts to contain the increasing high rate of crime in the country, which is why all hands must be on deck to fight crime to its root in our society,” he said.

He said the organisation had in the past two decades being at vanguard of efforts to assist the Police in particular and other security agencies in general through information dissemination and intelligence gathering to enable them prevent and combat crime effectively.

“Our organisation has a wide spread at the grassroots, as our members, who are mainly trader and artisans, operate and live within the communities, thereby enjoying close relationship with members of the public, with whom we have built confidence and trust to share information together, which we eventually pass on to security agencies.

“We have also expanded many resources on logistic support to the Police by installing computers with Internet service, including seminar and workshop, at various Police formations across the country to facilitate communication process.”

Ayangbure of Ikorodu kingdom, Oba K.A. Shotobi, commended the effort of the organisation, recalling the terrible security situation in most part of Ikorodu, which he said had been put under control, following the prompt and decisive actions of the Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
