The Senate yesterday passed the bill for an act to establish the chartered Institute of Forensic and Investigative Auditors of Nigeria (IFIAN) for its second reading. It seeks to provide a professional platform for the practice of forensic and investigative audit to checkmate corruption in the public and private sectors.

Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan and representative of Anambra South senatorial district, Andy Uba jointly sponsored the bill.In their presentation, it was affirmed that the bill, when it finally becomes law would provide a platform where qualified and dedicated professionals would use forensic science and technology to discharge their functions.

It would also provide a platform for practitioners to eliminate cases of compromised auditing process, reporting, camouflaging accounting facts and figures, as well as aid the anti-graft fight by training its agencies officials.

The bill would provide home based forensic and investigative auditors who will save the Federal Government the cost of hiring foreign forensic auditors for investigation of fraud cases.

Meanwhile, the American Anti-Corruption Institute of Nigeria (AACI) has put measures in place to train professionals in the country on new ways to tackle corruption public institutions and government agencies. This followed its concern over the level of corruption in the country and the inability of government at all levels to win the war against graft in spite of efforts to purge the country of the menace.

It admitted that it is evident that corruption became an international phenomenon that traverses national borders. “It is no longer an option to do nothing regarding fraud and corruption. However, fighting corruption is multifaceted and should always be carried out in a disciplined manner.

The AACI believes that its management is well positioned to effectively fight fraud and corruption in the country.A strategic partner with AACI in Nigeria, Dr. Fagbayide A. Oluwole, said: “It is apparent that corruption is a bacteria and epidemic that extinguishes the economic potential and growth of Nations if not nipped in the bud.  “Everyone must imbibe the spirit of anti-corruption fight to enable the government to provide the much desired dividends of democracy.”
