Senate moves to ensure compliance by presidency, MDAs to NASS resolutions

The Senate, yesterday said it has set in motion, machinery that would ensure strict compliance by the Presidency, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government, to all resolutions reached by the National Assembly.
The decision to ensure compliance on the path of the executive arm of government led to the constitution of the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance, which was inaugurated yesterday.
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, while delivering his inaugural speech, said the intent behind the constitution of the committee was to ensure that “the resolutions of the upper chamber are not abused” by the executive arm of government.
According to him, among the responsibilities of the committee would be to “ensure that some of the laws passed by the National Assembly are strictly adhered to” by the relevant MDAs of government.
Prominent among the committee’s duties include: Monitoring legislative compliance by government agencies; reporting non-compliance to the National Assembly and taking prompt and appropriate action to rectify same.

The presidency should be communicated on the case of the SGF and have him direct Babachir Lawal to resign his appointment or be forced to quit. His utterances portray him as a man who has no regard for the legislature, and should be made to stay out of the corridors of power. It is quite unbecoming of a man in his position to react the way he did to the recommendations of our hallowed Senate and its distinguished members. The Presidency owes this nation his respect for his avowed commitment to attack corruption frontally.

It is a welcome development. The caveat however, is that it should not be used by the legislative to twist the arm of the executive on policies that would hurt the economy like padding the budget for ‘constituency’ projects which is not done in other clime and other corrupt acts. RMFAC should be left to do their work of fixing salaries for all in government.
