Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto), has established Environmental Sanitation Vanguards made up of 170 youths as part of his contributions to keep Sokoto city clean.

Spokesman for the former governor, Ibrahim Adamu, made this known at the inauguration of the group in Sokoto on Sunday.

Adamu, who is also the Coordinator of the programme, said “these youths are unemployed and are out of school.

“They will be operating on Saturdays and Sundays between 8am and 10am.

“Each of them will be receiving a monthly allowance of N10,000 while they will be issued with uniforms and identity cards”, he added.

Adamu also stated that there are 130 males and 40 females.

According to him, the youths would be cleaning major streets and other
public places in Sokoto city and its environs.

He said the former governor’s gesture was aimed at complementing the efforts of the State Government to rid the city of filth and its attendant negative health implications.

“Most of these youths had also been given sponsorship to go back to schools, up to the university.

“The programme helps to reduce unemployment and poverty, as well as youth restiveness in the state.”

Spokesman for the youths, Junaidu Mohammed, commended Wamakko for initiating the programme, and promised that they would work diligently.
