Worried that the increasing rate of cultism and drug abuse among youths could pose grave danger, security agencies in Lagos State have engaged in road walk campaigns to promote awareness against the menace.

The security agencies include the Nigerian Police Force, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNC), and Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Lagos State Command.

Non-security agencies are Youths for New Nigeria (YNN) and secondary school students.

The campaign is sponsored by the Nigeria Policing Programme (NPP) and Community Safety Partnership (CSP) in partnership with Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area.

The Lagos Intervention Office of NPP, Ivy Basil Ofili, said the campaign was initiated to sensitise the community against cultism and drug abuse, which could give rise to crises and insecurity.

Chairman, Police Community Safety Partnership, Felix Usalo, noted that if nothing is done to curb cultism and drug abuse among youths in communities, the 2019 elections would be chaotic.

“Our fear is that if we allow it to continue, especially now that elections are coming, the people engaged in these heinous acts could be used as political thugs and we don’t want that,” he said.
