A university don, Dr. Danladi Yunusa Hakimi, has attributed the dearth of qualified and professional teachers at the basic education level in the country to the abolition of teacher training colleges.

Hakimi, who is a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, told journalists in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, that the situation has continued to affect the quality of students churned out yearly from the country’s tertiary institutions.

The Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and seasoned educationalist urged all stakeholders in the sector to pay serious attention to basic education from where the raw materials are sourced, adding: “Our basic education, as the foundation of education, has faced serious neglect and expecting a formidable structure from virtually faulty foundation is unrealistic.”

The lecturer, who was in the state on research, also attributed the decline in the quality of students in public, primary and secondary schools to lack of effective monitoring of the teaching staff, as is being done in private schools, adding that efforts should be made by northern governor to restructuring the education systems.

He commended the effort of the Kebbi and Niger states governments in rescuing basic education in their states by initiating sustainable programmes and policies, noting: “They were able to succeed through the school development approach and by addressing the issue of unqualified teachers by establishing professional training institute in Mararaban Dandaudu in Munya Council,” he said.

He admonished all stakeholders in the sector to partner with the state governments on the school feeding programme introduced by the federal government for it to succeed.
