Scholars from different parts of the country yesterday proffered solutions to the leadership crises in the country. They spoke at the launch of Philip Ejiofor’s book, Leading Rights: Nigeria at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos.

The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, blamed the country’s crisis on the non-qualification of most leaders and the lack of the necessary experience to hold positions in the government.

Ajimobi, who was represented by Gbade Ojo, added that “Our leaders are not sufficiently patriotic, hence the appalling state of the country.”

In his address, the Keynote Speaker, Prof. Ebere Onwudiwe, said: “Leadership and governance are like two sides of the same coin, since governance is to lead.

“If Nigeria has had good governance, we would have been propelled to the status of rich and modernised state among countries of the world.”

According to him, the country has the potential to become a member of the G20, but poor leadership and corruption have suffocated all the elements for development.

Onwudiwe disclosed that the country’s exit from recession was due to some drastic leadership steps taken by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, particularly in the Niger Delta.

“If we are able to have leaders of this caliber in the country, we would in no time, be a force to reckon with,” he said.

One of the book reviewers, a Professor of History and International Studies, Siyan Oyeweso, explained: “There is nothing wrong with the climate, environment or structure of this country, but where we have problem is the leadership.”

He condemned the positions of some leaders who promote their ethnicity above the country and strategise to remain in power at all cost.

The author, who is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, said the level of deterioration in the leadership of both public and private sectors, prompted him to write the book.
